Introduction to Drawing

It is a mystery how some people seem to be able to draw ANYTHING without any effort at all. Others have to sit over their drawing for hours, erasing and tweaking…

Well.  A person who can draw just anything, so easily, is really rare.  And a person who wants a final product just so perfect, well, not really that unusual. But honestly, most of us need a little help learning how to draw – stuff.  There are SO MANY BOOKS to help people learn to draw, and if one is patient, and studies them carefully, one CAN learn to draw.  Or I can help you.

I teach people how to draw.  Little People, and bigger people. I will teach you how to accomplish what you visualize, in black, and white, and gray!  Learning simple strategies for effective results.  My results are affected by genetic tremor.  BUT.  I still LOVE TO DRAW –  and so can you!

Let’s start with Trees-

How to Draw – Basics 1 – Trees 3/19/2019 6:00 $17

Drawing in Graphite

Graphite Classes for All Ages

A successful drawing in Graphite has a mystery, a mood, that is communicated to the viewer.  If the artist has done their job, it is well understood. But it isn’t a hard thing to do, it only requires a few… tips and tricks… of the trade to create breath taking drawings in Graphite.  It isn’t about how well you draw, but how you present the subject, and that is part of what we stress with Graphite lessons.  All our classes teach forms of “Drawing”, but the Graphite class emphasizes methods of working the drawing board to gain maximum impact.

I teach all my classes for – beginners to advanced – so you can begin with the most basic classes or take the more advanced classes. The Basic Class is the “Family Class”  But beginners are also welcome in the Introduction to Graphite class as well!

I teach three  different types of drawing classes:

“Little Hands”  Children  –  Ages 4-6  for information about these classes click here:  Little Hands

“Family classes” – Ages 7-to Adult – These classes are designed for young or new artists, young or old. This class is set up for individuals or a child and parent.  Individual children or adults are welcome to attend, but if an adult wishes to attend with a child, the child’s rate is discounted. (But only with accompanying adult)  For more information click here: Family Class

“Introduction to Drawing  , Graphite Tips and Tricks  – Ages 12 to Adult   – For more information click here:  Introduction to Drawing

This class is about HOW TO DRAW.  How to capture form, and shape.  Gesture Drawing.  Outlining. Sketching.  Creating 3d, from plain white paper.  Teaching you how to see, so you can create the image you want to create.  Using methodology that helps anyone draw any object they want.  Check the Calendar for classes that fit your schedule.  Calendar

Introduction to Graphite – Tips and Tricks

Yes, everyone knows how to use a pencil.  But there is way more to drawing in graphite than just – using a pencil.  First with technology, graphite is changing and allowing us to do so many beautiful things, we could only do with ink before.

Secondly, graphite is a wonderful way to express yourself, with so little by way of baggage!  Just grab some paper, your pencil case – and go!

Tonal values (contrast) are an important part of any artwork.  Graphite drawing is the first step in planning where a piece of artwork is going.  A graphite drawing (yes some people prefer charcoal, and the same techniques apply) is to a painting what an outline is to a short story or book.  Yes you can do a painting without a plan, but it will work out much better with a plan.

Additionally, graphite drawings are beautiful in their own space.

Classes for March and April 2019 at The Hobby Lobby  ( Map)  in Statesville, I will be teaching several Graphite classes, but the first one, The Introduction to Graphite covers the most information regarding – HOW graphite – can change your creative life!!!

The first lesson is designed to cover the basic design that we will explore through the other 3 lessons in other media.  The children really like expanding on a subject in other media.   The exploration in following up with the other media teach the children to build concepts of artistic expression, and when they learn they can learn skills that grow that expression by listening and observing it reaches out into other areas of their lives and improving their analytical skills and classroom performance.

The first lesson in a series is always the “Drawing” lesson, as this is where the artist plans his painting, sculpture etc.  So the drawing stage is very important.

For a young child this  helps them understand process.  First we draw the picture and then add in the details that make it more realistic.  Shadows, contrast, reflections, light.  Things that to a young mind are abstract rather than concrete, so when they see the importance of these things their mind blossoms with creativity.  Taught in a  child friendly method!!!

Even adults are excited, when they experience first hand the creative stimulation of working in oil pastels.  The medium allows a “dig your hands in” experience with the manageability of crayon.  Students can experiment painlessly with layering and blending colors, something not possible with crayon.   Also it helps develop those fine motor skills because the fingers are working in coordination with the brain to not just draw, but to “Think” on paper.  While it looks simple enough, it is an immersive experience that children and adults really enjoy, but for the younger child – is universe expanding!
