Acrylic Painting

Some people really like the simplicity of painting with acrylics.  They mix easily with water,  dry fast for easy painting and handling, can be painted on canvas, wood, paper, glass, metal, you name it, they can be painted on it, except oil base paints.  Then you need special primers!

Acrylics are less expensive that oil paints, and can be used “Impasto” like thick oil paints, or in a watercolor, flowing wash style.  Or both!  They are so versatile, people often start with acrylics before anything else.

I teach all my classes for – beginners to advanced – so you need not start with acrylics, unless you just want to!

I teach four different types of acrylic painting classes:

Introduction to Acrylic Painting Parts 1 and 2

This class is designed for new Acrylic painting artists.  Everything the student needs to learn about how to begin and complete an Acrylic painting.  Many students find that painting with acrylics is where they want to begin.  Many people prefer acrylics because they dry so quickly, a painting can be completed in one sitting.

Acrylic Painting Part 1.

In this class students will learn the different styles of acrylic painting,  how to work their backgrounds, how to design their painting,  to layer the paint, brush stroke, methods, and how to work with mediums.

We will also discuss different canvas options.  Watercolor Bond,  stretch canvas, board, and how to prepare each.

You will learn everything in the painting about how to paint in acrylic, and complete the first painting.  See the Calendar for dates and times.

Acrylic Paint Part 2.

In this painting class we will learn more about manipulating the paint by mixing and brush strokes, to achieve different looks that we desire.  Using your colors for mood, tonal values, and definition, using watercolor pencils and getting a more finished look.  You can bring your own photo to work from or follow the instructor to a completed painting.

The first lesson is designed to cover the basic design that we will explore through the other 3 lessons in other media.  The children really like expanding on a subject in other media.   The exploration in following up with the other media teach the children to build concepts of artistic expression, and when they learn they can learn skills that grow that expression by listening and observing it reaches out into other areas of their lives and improving their analytical skills and classroom performance.

The first lesson in a series is always the “Drawing” lesson, as this is where the artist plans his painting, sculpture etc.  So the drawing stage is very important.

For a young child this  helps them understand process.  First we draw the picture and then add in the details that make it more realistic.  Shadows, contrast, reflections, light.  Things that to a young mind are abstract rather than concrete, so when they see the importance of these things their mind blossoms with creativity.  Taught in a  child friendly method!!!

Even adults are excited, when they experience first hand the creative stimulation of working in oil pastels.  The medium allows a “dig your hands in” experience with the manageability of crayon.  Students can experiment painlessly with layering and blending colors, something not possible with crayon.   Also it helps develop those fine motor skills because the fingers are working in coordination with the brain to not just draw, but to “Think” on paper.  While it looks simple enough, it is an immersive experience that children and adults really enjoy, but for the younger child – is universe expanding!
